"The Hug" by Tom Wills, February 2015. |
The above illustration is based on a friend's Facebook profile picture. I saw it one day, and then another, and eventually messaged her: "That would make a nice drawing."
Indeed, it did, I believe.
It's such a warm pose.
The original photo was taken by her sister-in-law, another friend, in a dining room at Christmas 2014. We zeroed in on the central emotion, stripped away the trim and made this happen.
Grandma and grandson -- period.
I do work with clients throughout the art process, emailing images back and forth -- asking if things look right or not. They're not bashful. Hey, it's their money and they want it right because it's gonna last a lifetime. I hope they last through multiple lifetimes and get passed down through generations.
Whoa, that sweater was a challenge!
We also went back and forth a little about frame choices. At first we thought a sturdy oak frame would look right, but then we looked further and came up with a coffee brown frame with some gold accents. It is a little thicker, a lot darker -- but much better for her dining room.
We're both a little excited about this one. It's like Christmas all over again. (But, am I ever ready for spring!)
